Landscape Displacement Tutorial

Tutorial / 23 March 2026

Hey all,

Here is a new video covering some landscape displacement. This video uses a landscape material that's in my train series that I have been doing. You can check out the full series on my YouTube channel covering my station build. I wanted to show in this video how you can easily use some displacement to create a lot more depth and height information in your ground materials. This helps a ton with large flat materials where you don't really have many assets covering the ground.

I will probably make a follow up to this one diving into some details even further but I thought it might be helpful if you are starting out with them!

I first create the geometry inside of Autodesk Maya and then bring it in and set up the emissive material that utilizes some of the benefits of the new lumen lighting. The second video goes over a quick tip on how to be a little bit more organized when working with your lighting in scene with a tool that helps speed up workflow and iteration with lighting.

These cover things like baking from high to low poly in engine, how to bake ambient occlusion from a single mesh, and also decimating down a high poly mesh and using the UV editor to UV the asset! UE5 Tutorials Part 2: Displacement Materials & Converting a Scene

Tutorial / 29 March 2022

Hi everyone,

Recently I decided to convert one of my older projects from UE4 to UE5. This project was shelved for a couple of years and being that I had forgotten a lot about what I was doing with it lighting wise, I decided to convert it and start the lighting from scratch. Additionally this project had used tessellation inside of UE4 and so I wanted to figure out the new way of tessellating inside of UE5 since the material features seem to have been removed. These two videos below go over my process of converting the project over to UE5 and setting up the basic lighting and additionally, fixing my tessellated ground material that I had setup previously and using the new displacement methods!

Hope you find these helpful!

I mentioned it before but I am starting a series of short tutorials on YouTube going over quick tips and tricks inside of Unreal Engine 5. It uses my Arch Vis environment and I wanted to do this just to share some stuff that I have had trouble with in the past and I also just really enjoy making short form content like this. I plan to continue furthering this environment and along the way I'll be posting around one video per week just to stay consistent and structured with it!
